Vishton received his doctorate in experimental psychology and cognitive science from Cornell University in 1996. His research has explored the interaction of perception and action in both adults and infants. He has received funding from both the National Institute of Child Health and Development and the National Science Foundation. He has served as the Program Director for Developmental and Learning Sciences at the National Science Foundation, and is a Consulting Editor for the journalChild Development. Vishton is an Associate Professor of Psychology at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.
